Boni & Liveright
Boni & Liveright was a short-lived but influential New York publishing house founded in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright. It began by issuing inexpensive reprints of modern classics under the Modern Library imprint, then quickly became known for daring new literature.
The firm published early work by Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Theodore Dreiser, Sherwood Anderson, Eugene O’Neill, Hart Crane, and John Reed’s Ten Days That Shook the World. It also challenged censorship laws in court.
Boni left after a few years (the partners famously settled control with a coin toss). Liveright, a flamboyant promoter, ran the house through the 1920s. In 1925 he sold the Modern Library to Bennett Cerf, who used it as the foundation of Random House. Financial mismanagement and the Depression forced Liveright out around 1930; the company declared bankruptcy in 1933.
The remaining backlist was later acquired by W.W. Norton, which revived the Liveright name as an imprint in 2012. Despite lasting only about sixteen years as an independent firm, Boni & Liveright is remembered as one of the most important American publishers of the 1920s literary renaissance.
