Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka Books, Quotes, Biography, Novels
Franz Kafka (July 3, 1883 – June 3, 1924) was a German-language writer born in Prague (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Czech Republic) to a middle-class Jewish family. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century literature, famous for his explorations of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, bureaucracy, and the absurd.

Kafka trained as a lawyer and earned a doctorate in 1906, but spent most of his career working at an insurance company in Prague, handling workers’ compensation claims. This day job left him little time and energy for writing, which he pursued intensely late at night. He had a strained relationship with his domineering father (a theme that recurs in his work, most directly in his famous Letter to His Father), multiple failed engagements (notably to Felice Bauer), and suffered from chronic health issues, including tuberculosis, which led to his early death at age 40 in a sanatorium near Vienna.

He published very little during his lifetime—mostly short stories in magazines—and instructed his friend Max Brod to destroy his unpublished manuscripts upon his death. Brod famously ignored this request and edited/published the major novels posthumously, securing Kafka’s place in literary history.

Major Works
Kafka’s writing blends realism with surreal, nightmarish elements, often leaving readers with a sense of inescapable dread. His style gave rise to the term “Kafkaesque”, describing absurd, oppressive, and nightmarishly bureaucratic situations.
The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung, 1915) — His most famous work: traveling salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up transformed into a giant insect, exploring themes of isolation, family burden, and dehumanization.
The Trial (Der Prozess, 1925, posthumous) — A man named Josef K. is arrested and prosecuted by an inaccessible authority for an unspecified crime, highlighting incomprehensible bureaucracy and guilt.
The Castle (Das Schloss, 1926, posthumous) — A land surveyor struggles endlessly to gain access to a mysterious castle and its authorities, symbolizing unattainable power and futile quests for meaning.
Other key works include the unfinished novel Amerika (also known as The Man Who Disappeared, 1927), short stories like In the Penal Colony, A Hunger Artist, A Country Doctor, and The Judgment.

His diaries, letters, and aphorisms also reveal a deeply introspective, self-critical mind, often wrestling with identity, Judaism, and the act of writing itself.
