George Orwell

George Orwell Books, Quotes, Biography, Novels
George Orwell (1903–1950), born Eric Arthur Blair, was one of the 20th century’s most influential English writers, essayists, and critics. He is celebrated for his unflinching opposition to totalitarianism, imperialism, and the abuse of power, as well as his clear, direct prose style that championed honesty in language and thought.

Born June 25, 1903, in Motihari, Bengal (British India), Orwell grew up in England in modest circumstances. He attended Eton but skipped university, serving instead in the Imperial Police in Burma (1922–1927), an experience that fueled his lifelong anti-imperialist stance.

Adopting the pen name George Orwell in the 1930s, he lived in poverty in Paris and London, chronicled in Down and Out in Paris and London (1933). A democratic socialist, he fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1937), was shot through the throat, and witnessed Stalinist betrayals that informed Homage to Catalonia (1938).

His two most enduring works are:
Animal Farm (1945) — A satirical allegory of the Russian Revolution, where animals rebel against human farmers only for the pigs to establish a new tyranny. Iconic line: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) — A chilling dystopia of a surveillance state under Big Brother, featuring concepts like “doublethink,” “Newspeak,” “thoughtcrime,” and perpetual war. Phrases such as “Big Brother is watching you” remain cultural touchstones.

Other notable works include essays like “Politics and the English Language” (on clear writing and propaganda) and novels such as Burmese Days and Coming Up for Air.

Orwell died of tuberculosis on January 21, 1950, at age 46, shortly after Nineteen Eighty-Four’s release. Buried under his real name in a simple grave in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire.
