Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, and one of the most important figures in Romantic literature. She is best known as the author of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), widely regarded as the first science fiction novel and a foundational work of Gothic fiction.

At age 16, she began a relationship with the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (already married at the time). They eloped to Europe in 1814, faced significant social scandal, and married in 1816 after Percy’s first wife died.

The famous origin of Frankenstein came during the summer of 1816, when Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and others stayed at Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva. Amid bad weather, Byron suggested they each write a ghost story. Mary’s contribution became Frankenstein, inspired partly by discussions about galvanism (early experiments in reanimating dead tissue with electricity) and her own experiences with loss (including the death of her first child).

Major Works
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818, revised 1831) — her most famous novel, exploring themes of creation, responsibility, ambition, isolation, and the ethics of science.
The Last Man (1826) — a post-apocalyptic novel about a plague that wipes out humanity.
Valperga (1823), Perkin Warbeck (1830), and several other historical novels.
Short stories, travel writing (Rambles in Germany and Italy, 1844), essays, and biographies (including editing and annotating Percy’s poetry after his death in 1822).

She published anonymously at first (Frankenstein was initially attributed to Percy), but later editions carried her name.

Mary Shelley is celebrated for pioneering science fiction, blending Gothic horror with profound philosophical questions about humanity, technology, and what it means to be “monstrous.” Frankenstein remains hugely influential in literature, film, philosophy, and bioethics debates.

Her life was marked by personal tragedy — losing her husband, several children in infancy, and facing financial hardship — yet she continued writing and advocating for her husband’s literary legacy.
