Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright of Ukrainian descent, born March 31, 1809, in Sorochyntsi, Poltava Governorate (modern-day Ukraine). A key figure in Russian literature, his works blend satire, realism, and the supernatural, shaped by his Ukrainian heritage and early exposure to folklore.Moving to St. Petersburg in 1828, Gogol gained fame with Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka (1831–1832), vibrant tales of Ukrainian life. His Mirgorod (1835) collection, including “Taras Bulba,” explored Cossack history. St. Petersburg stories like “The Nose” and “The Overcoat” (1835) satirized bureaucracy and human flaws. His masterpiece, Dead Souls (1842), critiqued Russian society through a conman’s scheme to buy dead serfs’ names. His play The Government Inspector (1836) exposed corruption with sharp humor.Later, Gogol’s growing religious fervor and mental health struggles led him to destroy parts of Dead Souls’ second volume. He died in Moscow on March 4, 1852, after extreme fasting. His innovative style influenced writers like Dostoevsky and Kafka.
