North Point Press

North Point Press
North Point Press is a literary publishing imprint currently under Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG), which is part of Macmillan Publishers.

It specializes in hardcover and softcover literary nonfiction, with a focus on topics such as natural history, travel, ecology, music, food, and cultural criticism. Notable past and present authors associated with the imprint include Peter Matthiessen, Evan Connell, Beryl Markham, A. J. Liebling, and M.F.K. Fisher.

Originally founded in 1978 in Berkeley, California, by publisher William Turnbull and editor Jack Shoemaker. It operated as an independent press publishing literary fiction and nonfiction until it ceased new publications around 1990–1991. FSG acquired the name and portions of the backlist in the early 1990s (around 1992–1993), and it continued as an imprint with some older titles remaining available, though it was largely dormant for new releases for many years.

As of mid-2025, FSG announced the relaunch of North Point Press. They hired Catherine Tung (previously from Beacon Press) to manage it. The relaunched imprint aims to publish books that inspire personal growth, insight, engagement, and empowerment—often described as works that guide readers on “how to do things better” or contribute to positive individual and societal change. The first new titles under this revival were expected starting in late 2025 (e.g., November).
