The Odyssey By Homer
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, composed around the late 8th century BCE. It is one of the foundational works of Western literature and a sequel to The Iliad.

The story follows the Greek hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman tradition), king of Ithaca, on his perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. Ten years have passed since the fall of Troy, and Odysseus has not returned. His wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, face chaos at home: a horde of arrogant suitors has overrun the palace, feasting on their resources while pressuring Penelope to remarry, assuming Odysseus is dead.

The poem opens in medias res (in the middle of things). Odysseus is held captive for years on the island of the nymph Calypso. With help from the goddess Athena, the gods intervene to free him. His journey is filled with legendary adventures: encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the witch-goddess Circe, the Sirens, the monsters Scylla and Charybdis, the Lotus-Eaters, and a descent into the underworld. All the while, the sea god Poseidon—enraged by Odysseus blinding his son, the Cyclops—sends storms and obstacles against him.

Interwoven is Telemachus’s coming-of-age quest to find news of his father, guided by Athena. The epic builds to Odysseus’s disguised return to Ithaca, where he confronts the suitors and seeks to reclaim his throne and family.

The Odyssey remains a gripping tale of adventure, resilience, cleverness, and the enduring power of home and fidelity. It has influenced countless works of literature, art, and film for nearly three millennia. Popular modern translations include those by Robert Fagles, Emily Wilson, and Richmond Lattimore.
