Ticknor and Fields
Ticknor and Fields was a leading Boston publisher of the mid-19th century and one of the most important American literary houses of its era.

It began in 1832 as a bookstore (Old Corner Bookstore) founded by William Davis Ticknor. James T. Fields joined as a partner, and the firm became known as Ticknor and Fields. It published both American authors and authorized (paid) editions of British writers—an unusual practice at the time. It also published The Atlantic Monthly.

Financial problems led James R. Osgood to merge the company with Henry Oscar Houghton in 1878, forming a predecessor of Houghton Mifflin. Houghton Mifflin later revived “Ticknor and Fields” as an imprint from 1979 to 1989.

Ticknor and Fields is remembered as the publisher that put a large part of the New England Renaissance into print and helped define the American literary canon of the 1800s.
