Westvaco Corporation Books
Westvaco Corporation produced a collectible series of books known as the Westvaco Christmas Classics, later renamed the Westvaco American Classics Series and eventually the MeadWestvaco American Classics Series. These were limited edition volumes published annually from 1958 to 2007, each showcasing a classic work of American literature or historical writing. These books were originally created as holiday gifts for clients and publishing partners, the books were designed to demonstrate Westvaco’s high-quality printing papers and graphic design capabilities.

These were high-quality, hardcover books focusing on American literary classics by authors like Benjamin Franklin, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Langston Hughes. Each volume, typically octavo-sized (around 9″ x 5.5″), featured artful bindings, custom-illustrated slipcases, and, in later years, extras like DVDs or music CDs. The series is notable for its fine craftsmanship, with designs by figures like Bradbury Thompson and Karen M. Bloom, and printing using high-quality typefaces like Baskerville or Bodoni.
